← Revolutionising Tobacco Display: Waitrose
Tobacco
In response to the evolving tobacco category, Waitrose recognised the need to update their legacy gantries, from a time when tobacco could be visibly displayed and pre the vaping world of today. With more tobacco alternatives available to consumers than ever before, Waitrose needed a solution which was future proof and could respond to constant changing market conditions. From legislation changes, new product launches through to increasing theft risk, they needed a display which could adapt to their needs.
Waitrose commissioned our friends at Leap along with Valley, to develop a robust, adaptable unit that could effectively showcase modern tobacco alternatives such as heat-not-burn, vaping devices and nicotine pouches. Recognising this need within their tobacco area, we embarked on creating a solution that offered durability and versatility far superior to its predecessor.
Our involvement spanned the entire process, from creative design and engineering to test trials, production, and installation. The new design concept transformed the display units, taking them from timber to metal construction, ensuring longevity and ease of maintenance. Our solution was future-proof and flexible, allowing for updates and modifications as needed.
Drawers in the unit could be adjusted to open up display spaces or be removed entirely for enhanced security, with the ability to be wheeled and moved to different store areas as required. Additionally, the units could be easily moved off the shop floor at night, further addressing security concerns. For high-risk stores, we added a roller shutter to the vaping section of the unit, providing an extra level of security, ensuring a solution which was both secure and user-friendly.
The project was managed with efficiency in mind, with the units designed to be installed quickly, with minimal labour required, ensuring a streamlined installation process with minimal disruption to store operations. As a piece of design and engineering, the units fit together beautifully, allowing for precise assembly and easy future maintenance. The initial rollout of our new concept displays spans 116 Waitrose stores, with further planned for later this year. This extensive deployment saw heavy input and support from major brands such as Juul, JTI, and PMI, highlighting the collaborative effort from our teams managing the project.
This project is a testament to our quality and efficiency, with procurement feedback highlighting it as the ‘perfect project—smooth and seamless!’ Great team work!
